Our Self-Tape Setup at Home

It stays set up. Always.

Lincoln here. The single biggest change my mom made was leaving our self-tape setup up all the time. It's not a project we build the day sides drop - the backdrop is on the wall, the lights are on stands, the mic is plugged in and ready. When an audition comes in on a Thursday night with a Friday deadline, we're rolling in twenty minutes.

How Mom frames the shot

Landscape (horizontal), always. Camera at my eye level - never looking down at me, never up. Framed from mid-chest to a little space above my hair, with my eyes in the top third. Mom shoots on a phone with a small tripod. She refuses to hand-hold; even a tiny wobble reads as amateur.

Backdrop

Solid, unwrinkled, muted. We use a light gray-blue blanket taped smooth to the wall. No family photos, no reflective surfaces, nothing patterned. Nothing behind me should compete with my face - Mom's exact words.

Lighting

Two soft LED panels at 45 degrees to my face. Both the same color temperature - mixing warm and cool light makes skin look weird on camera. Mom watches the playback for a little bright spot in my eyes (called a catchlight). If she doesn't see one in each eye, we adjust before the take, not after.

Never shoot with a window behind you - it turns the actor into a silhouette. Ask me how I know.

Sound

A small clip-on mic (lav) plugged into the phone. Phone mics grab the AC, the fridge, and my little cousin in the next room. Mom kills every noise source she can before we roll - HVAC off, doors closed, phones on silent. She always records a five-second test and listens on headphones before we do a real take.

Mom as reader

Mom reads with me. She's not trying to steal the scene - she gives me real energy and real emotion to react to, without going over the top. When a scene is emotionally heavy or the other character is another kid, we bring in one of my coaches to read instead. A flat reader kills a good performance faster than bad lighting.

Slate & takes

Slate is short - I say my name, agency, height, and location, then show profiles. Under 15 seconds, warm not stiff. For each scene we send two takes, distinctly different choices. Mom will not let us send five variations of the same read. Pick the two strongest, cut the rest.

Filing before sending

Files go out as MP4, 1080p, named exactly the way the breakdown asks - usually Pettis_Lincoln_RoleName.mp4. Wrong file names get tapes tossed before anyone watches. Mom double-checks the file name every single time.
